It’s a great point, thanks for mentioning it. Probably deserving of its own article! After thinking about it I realized that one could argue that monetary donation frequently, almost inevitably, leads to emotional investment (especially on Kickstarter, where elaborate “Rewards” are involved that feel an awful lot like a commercial exchange), sowing seeds for eventual disappointment.

Maybe the Kickstarter model is a new hybrid species of “donation” altogether, the way the “lease-to-own” hybrid concept eventually sprang up in the auto industry.
